The Pessimist
A human never in his life had kissed
Because he felt that life had passed him by.
He was the prime example of a pessimist
A negative and sorry kind of guy.
No matter what, he always saw the darkest view.
He thought of life as sorrow and as pain
And even on a sunny day he thought he knew
That right around the corner it would rain.
He read it somewhere what a poet said:
That life is what you make of it.
He tried it for a day or so and then instead
To carry on just as the poet said, he quit.
Time after time fate proved him wrong.
There is an ageless truth he never learned:
If you believe in happiness and smiles and song
Fate also smiles; however, he felt spurned.
He knew he wouldn't live past sixty-one
And never would collect Social Security.
But then, when ev'rything was said and done,
Again fate proved him wrong at eighty-three.
