The lost Dog

A human was vacation bound
With wife and with their little hound
To see the desert of the West.
And so he deemed it best

To rent a well equipped RV
So wife, and dog, and he,
Would have, especially his wife,
All comforts and amenities of life.

The desert was a peaceful place,
He loved the quiet, and unhurried pace.
It soothed his spirit and his soul
Where daily grind had left its toll.

He didn't miss his usual city life
Of traffic snarls, of crime and strife.
In fact, he soaked up tons of solitude
Which put him in a happy mood.

They watched an eagle and a hawk,
And evenings they took a walk.
But then, one evening, as they returned,
They were, with reason, quite concerned

Because their little pet, their hound
Was nowhere to be seen or found.
They searched the neighborhood in vain
But all they found: his collar chain.

They sat up late in bed in misery
And shed a tear, or two, or three.
Then, in the morning the next day
They knew their pooch had fallen prey

To a coyote's hungry appetite,
Because they clearly heard all night
The hunters' yip and bark and howl
As they were on their nightly prowl.

The humans had not slept till four,
While deep behind a closet door
A little dog, as you have guessed,
Had had a good night's rest.
