The Elk Hunt

A human after reading how to hunt
Soon raided his vacation fund
To buy a rifle still in good condition
And also plenty hunting ammunition.

Some leather boots, an orange vest,
And then expectantly flew West,
Where, he had heard back East,
Lived elk, a big, reclusive beast.

High in the mountains where he hunted
The air was thin, he wheezed and grunted
On hiking trails, some up, some down,
While wishing he was back in town.

But finally, long past mid-day
He crossed a ridge and spied his prey,
Its body hidden in deep shade.
And since it was now getting late

He hurried down the rocky scree.
He turned his ankle, banged his knee,
Then through a creek and gooey mud,
And through a thicket which drew blood

As thorny branches scratched his hide,
Until he had the animal in sight.
He almost pulled the trigger through
When suddenly his elk said 'MOOO'.
